Prairie du Chien

Return to the Strawberry Point home page.

Prairie du Chien residents invite you to experience their unique, historic river town nestled between towering bluffs of the mighty Mississippi River. The picturesque area offers visitors: historic sites and museums; unlimited recreation on land and water along Wisconsin’s Great River Road; antique and specialty shops; family-oriented attractions and riverboat casino gaming; a national monument, state and city parks; and much, much more.

Prairie du Chien is the second oldest settlement in Wisconsin, with Green Bay as the oldest. Long before white settlers arrived in the area, the prairie was neutral ground where Native Americans met to trade and barter. The area was claimed by Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet for France in 1673. They were the first white men to view the Upper Mississippi as they traveled down the Wisconsin River. Prairie du Chien (French for “Prairie of Dog”) was named for Alim, a Fox Indian chief, whose name means “dog” in English.

Prairie du Chien’s St. Feriole Island, on the shores of the Mississippi River, is where early history transpired. The historic Villa Louis, mansion of Hercules Dousman, is located on the mound of St. Feriole Island, where it has remained protected from floodwaters for centuries. Operated by the Wisconsin State Historical Society, it is open to visitors May through October. History of Prairie du Chien further abounds at Fort Crawford Museum where historic artifacts and collections may be viewed during the same months.

As of long ago, Prairie du Chien’s hospitality continues to welcome visitors.

Special events are held throughout the year, providing numerous opportunities for entertainment, competition, and interaction with the past and present. Come to see why Prairie du Chien is “your” Port of Discovery along the Mississippi River.
